High-level thief, Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) rose to the top of his game by being cleaver, watchful, and impossible to capture. L.A.P.D. Detective Vince Hanna (Al Pacino) always gets his man…and he wants McCauley. Pulling McCauley over one night, instead of seeking arrest, Hanna invites McCauley to have coffee. Satisfied that Hanna can’t touch him, McCauley accepts. Both men sit tense, speaking in innuendos, coming to an impasse. Hanna’s personal life is the opposite of his successful career. He’s in his third marriage, with Justice (Diane Venora), who resents his obsession with his job. One of McCauley's gang members is a thief named Shiherlis (Val Kilmer), whose wife is Charlene (Ashley Judd). McCauley vows never to get involved in anything that he can't get rid of in 30 seconds flat, but when he encounters Eady (Amy Brenneman), he breaks his life-long rule and falls in love. Then McCauley plans one last heist. Hanna is at the ready to capture him. McCauley’s cool temporarily falters now that Eady is in his life. He has a choice to make - flee quickly, or risk it all.
